How do I calculate how much PA power I need?

Calculate PA power by determining the required SPL at the listening position, accounting for distance and speaker sensitivity, then add 6–10 dB of headroom for peaks.

To calculate PA power, start with the desired SPL at the farthest listener. For live music, aim for 100–105 dB continuous with 10–15 dB headroom for peaks. Use the inverse-square law: SPL drop = 20 × log(distance in meters). Subtract this from your target SPL to find the required SPL at 1 meter from the speaker.

Next, compare that required SPL to the speaker’s sensitivity (dB SPL at 1W/1m). The power needed in watts = 10^((required SPL – sensitivity)/10). For example, if you need 120 dB at 1m and sensitivity is 98 dB, power = 10^((120-98)/10) = 10^2.2 ≈ 158 watts. Then multiply by the number of speakers and add headroom.
