How do I choose a power amplifier?

Quick answer

Choose a power amplifier by matching its power rating (RMS or continuous) to your loudspeaker's program power rating, ensuring the amplifier can deliver clean power without clipping, and considering impedance, damping factor, and system reliability.

The most critical factor is matching amplifier power to your loudspeaker's program power rating (typically 2x the continuous rating). An amplifier that is too weak will clip, damaging tweeters; one that is too powerful can overpower the speakers. Aim for an amplifier that delivers 1.5–2 times the speaker's continuous power rating at the nominal impedance.

Impedance matching is essential: if your speakers are 8 ohms, ensure the amplifier is stable at 8 ohms per channel. For multiple speakers per channel, calculate the total load (e.g., two 8-ohm speakers in parallel = 4 ohms) and verify the amplifier can handle that impedance. SSOUNDS amplifiers are designed for consistent performance across common loads.

Damping factor (ratio of load impedance to amplifier output impedance) affects low-frequency control. A higher damping factor (≥200) provides tighter bass. Also consider cooling (fan vs. convection), weight, and protection features like short-circuit and thermal protection. For touring, lightweight Class D amplifiers are preferred; for installs, Class AB may offer better sound quality.

Finally, ensure the amplifier has the necessary inputs/outputs (XLR, SpeakON) and DSP if needed. SSOUNDS amplifiers integrate seamlessly with our loudspeakers, offering pre-configured presets for optimal performance. Always audition the system and consult the manufacturer's specs.

Key things to consider

  • Match amplifier RMS power to speaker program power (1.5–2x continuous rating).
  • Check impedance compatibility: total load must be within amplifier's stable range.
  • Higher damping factor (>200) gives tighter bass control.
  • Consider cooling, weight, and protection features for your application.
  • Use DSP presets from the speaker manufacturer for best results.
