What is the difference between Art-Net and sACN?

Art-Net and sACN (Streaming ACN) are protocols used to send DMX512 lighting control data over standard Ethernet networks. Art-Net, developed by Artistic Licence in 1998, is widely adopted and uses UDP broadcast, sending data to all devices on the network regardless of whether they need it. This can cause network congestion in large installations. sACN, standardized by ANSI E1.31 in 2009, uses multicast, so data is only sent to devices subscribed to specific universes, reducing bandwidth usage.

sACN offers several advantages: it supports per-universe priority levels, allowing higher-priority controllers to override lower ones, and includes a synchronization mechanism for precise timing across multiple universes. Art-Net lacks these features and relies on a simpler, less efficient broadcast model. However, Art-Net's simplicity and long history mean it remains common in smaller systems and legacy equipment.

For professional audio-visual installations, sACN is generally preferred for its efficiency and advanced features, especially in large-scale or networked environments.
