Speech intelligibility in reverberant rooms, and what a loudspeaker can do about it

Abstract. Music forgives a reverberant room; speech does not. This note explains where intelligibility lives in the speech signal, how reverberant energy destroys it, why the Speech Transmission Index is the measure that matters, and which loudspeaker properties actually move it.

Where intelligibility lives

Vowels carry the power of speech; consonants carry the meaning. The consonant cues that distinguish one word from another are short, low-energy events concentrated in the upper mid band, roughly two to eight kilohertz. Lose them and listeners hear that someone is speaking without being able to say what was said.

Reverberation is the mechanism of that loss. A room's decay fills the gaps between speech sounds with the smeared energy of the sounds before them, and the quiet consonant cues are the first thing buried. The measure that captures this is the Speech Transmission Index, which quantifies how well the slow modulations of speech survive the path from loudspeaker to listener through the room's reflections and noise.

What a loudspeaker can change

A loudspeaker cannot shorten a room's reverberation time, but it decides how much of its energy excites the room instead of the audience. Directivity is the lever: energy held on the seating area arrives direct, while energy sprayed onto walls and ceiling returns as the smear that buries consonants. Holding pattern control down through the vocal band, and keeping the response through the crossover region coherent rather than lobed, raises the ratio of direct to reverberant sound at the listener, which is what raises STI.
