Small ceiling speakers carry speech and background music well and leave out the low end, which is what makes music in a restaurant or a hotel bar sound thin. The CL8SUB adds it from the ceiling: a single 8″ woofer in a scalloped back-can that fits a ceiling cut-out on spring tabs, so the bass comes from the same plane as the CL6 and CL8 speakers around it and nothing stands on the floor. We specify it for restaurants, hotels, retail, resorts and the side rooms of mosques and other houses of worship. It is ported, so drive it through a high-pass filter, and its 100 V tap is set from the front with a screwdriver after it is in the ceiling. A 4 mm steel safety cable comes in the box, so the installer has a second attachment to the building structure without sourcing one: a ceiling tile is not rated to hold a subwoofer on its own.

CL stands for Ceiling Loudspeaker. Loudspeakers that mount in or hang from the ceiling, for distributed speech and music: the number is the driver size, P marks the pendant that hangs where there is no ceiling to cut, HD the Dante model that takes audio and power over one network cable, and SUB the ceiling subwoofer.

Measurement conditions

  1. Maximum SPL is the peak level at 1 m, driven with pink noise at crest factor 4 to the clipping point of the recommended amplifier, with the SSOUNDS system preset applied. Full-range enclosures are specified under free-field conditions; figures marked half-space are specified over a reflecting plane, the condition subwoofers are deployed in, which adds approximately 6 dB.
  2. Frequency response is specified on axis at 1 m in a free field. The tolerance the figure is referenced to is stated alongside it; where no tolerance is given, the figure is the −6 dB bandwidth.
  3. Sensitivity is specified at 1 W into the nominal impedance at 1 m on axis, averaged across the pass band of the enclosure.
  4. Coverage angles are nominal −6 dB values averaged across the pass band. Per-octave directivity data is available from SSOUNDS system design support for prediction and modelling.
  5. Power handling is rated to AES2 using pink noise with a 6 dB crest factor over a two-hour period. Programme power is twice the AES rating; peak power is four times.
  6. Nominal impedance is the manufacturer's rating for amplifier load calculation; minimum impedance across the operating band may be lower.
  7. Net weight excludes packaging, flight case, accessories and optional rigging hardware.
  8. Dimensions are stated in millimetres and exclude protruding rigging hardware, handles and connector panels unless noted.
  9. All figures are typical values for production units specified under the conditions above. Individual units may vary within published tolerances.
