What is the best speaker for a sports hall in South Africa?

Sports halls present a challenging acoustic environment: high ceilings, hard walls, and large reflective surfaces create long reverberation times that smear speech and reduce intelligibility. The primary goal is to deliver clear, even coverage to every seat and playing area while overcoming background noise from crowds and equipment. Directional loudspeakers, such as column arrays or clustered point-source boxes, are essential to focus energy on the audience and minimise reflections off walls and ceilings. For installations requiring long cable runs and multiple speakers, 70/100 V line distribution (as offered by SSOUNDS T models) simplifies wiring and allows flexible tap settings.

SSOUNDS offers a range of install loudspeakers suited to sports halls. The M series point-source boxes provide high SPL and controlled coverage, ideal for main systems or delays. The LC8.2 and LC16.2 slim column loudspeakers deliver tight vertical dispersion, keeping sound off the ceiling and walls, which is critical for speech clarity. For distributed systems or under-balcony areas, the P4, P5, P6T, P10T and P12T install loudspeakers (T models for 70/100 V lines) and CL6/CL8 ceiling loudspeakers offer discreet, full-range reinforcement. Subwoofers from the M series can extend low-frequency response for music playback. All SSOUNDS loudspeakers are built with impact-resistant enclosures and grilles, suitable for the rigours of a sports environment.

Selection and sizing depend on venue dimensions, seating layout, and program material. For a typical sports hall, a central cluster of M series point-source boxes or a left-right column array can cover the main floor, with delay speakers for deep or obstructed areas. Column loudspeakers are often preferred for their narrow vertical pattern, which reduces ceiling reflections and improves speech intelligibility. The number of boxes and their placement should be determined by acoustic modelling, which SSOUNDS engineers perform using AI-assisted prediction tools to optimise coverage and SPL before installation. Amplification and processing are handled by SSOUNDS A series networked amplifiers with DSP and Dante, providing flexible routing, EQ, and delay for each zone.

SSOUNDS designs and installs sound systems for sports halls and other venues across South Africa, with support from its African headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria, and its UK and US operations. For a project in South Africa, SSOUNDS works with local integrators and consultants to specify the right loudspeaker types, quantities, and amplifier channels.
